Gender Inclusive Housing

Information & Application Process

Gender Inclusive Housing at Eastern Connecticut State University offers students the opportunity to choose a living arrangement that best supports their comfort, identity, and personal preferences. This housing option allows students to request roommates regardless of gender identity while fostering an inclusive and respectful residential community. Eastern is committed to creating living environments where all students feel safe, supported, and welcome. Below, you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about eligibility, the application process, room selection, and availability.

Information For All Students

  • Gender Inclusive Housing is open to any student who wishes to live with someone of a different gender identity or sex. It is not limited to members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as Housing does not ask for, track, or maintain information about students’ sexual orientation. Any student may request and fill vacancies in a Gender Inclusive Housing assignment.

First Year Student Gender Inclusive Housing

  • For first-year students, Gender Inclusive Housing is located in a select number of suites in Constitution Hall and Mead Hall. Gender Inclusive Housing is not available in the traditional style halls. Students assigned to these areas will be changed the rates associated with the residence hall.     • Gender Inclusive Housing in Constitution Hall: students assigned to Constitution Hall will be placed in a double bedroom, four-person suite. Students will share a bedroom with one other student, and a suite with two other students (four students total per suite). Those students share a commode room (toilet), a shower room, and a two sink vanity. Single bedroom options are not available. For information on Constitution Hall, please CLICK HERE.

    • Gender Inclusive Housing in Mead Hall: students assigned to Mead Hall will be placed in a three-person bedroom, six-person suite. Students will share a bedroom with two other students, and a suite with three other students (six student total per suite). Those students will share a commode room (toilet), a shower room, a two sink vanity, a large living room, and a large pantry-style walk-in closet.   • Students may submit their New Student Gender Inclusive Housing Application before July 5th at 11:59pm to be considered for priority placement. 

    In addition to the New Student Gender Inclusive Housing Application, students must also:

    • Complete the Housing Application in the MyHousing Portal
    • Submit their non-refundable $250 Housing Deposit

    Placement in Gender Inclusive Housing is not a guarantee and is based on availability at the time of application review. Students may join or leave Gender Inclusive Housing at any time. 

    Students may request preferred roommates in Gender Inclusive Housing on their Gender Inclusive Housing Application. Preferred roommates must also complete the above requirements and be accepted into Gender Inclusive Housing.

Upper-Level Student Gender Inclusive Housing

  • Upper-level students self-select Gender Inclusive Housing during the Housing Selection Process in April of each academic year. Please see the Returning Student Housing Selection website for full details on the process.

    There will be rooms/suites/apartments designated for Gender Inclusive Housing across all of campus to reflect the Priority Point ratio across all students. This means that Gender Inclusive Housing does not guarantee selection or placement in a specific hall or area.

    We can guarantee that there will be enough beds in the Gender Inclusive Housing Selection Process, however there is no guarantee that one unit will be able to accommodate a full roommate group size. This means that it's possible that a preferred roommate group may need to break into smaller roommate groups during their pick time if there are no units with enough beds to accommodate a full roommate group size. 

    Students who do not elect to live in Gender Inclusive Housing and would rather live with other students who match their assigned-at-birth-sex will not be able to select a space that is designated for Gender Inclusive Housing. Additionally, if a roommate group of the same assigned-at-birth sex selects a suite or apartment in the Gender Inclusive Housing Community, but there are empty beds at the time of selection, the other beds in that unit will likely be filled by other students who do not match their assigned-at-birth sex.

  • For the Housing Selection Process:
    Students may disclose their interest in Gender Inclusive Housing on their housing application as they see fit, and they may build their roommate group to their choosing during the roommate matching phase of the process. 

    After Housing Selection:
    If a student is interested in moving into Gender Inclusive Housing, they should answer "yes" to the Gender Inclusive Housing question on the Room Change Request Form.
