Alumni Testimonials

Sumah Confer ’20
Behavior Technician

Sumah Confer ’20

Psychology major Sumah Confer ’20 is a paraprofessional at Chesapeake Bay Academy in Virginia. She was the lead researcher on a published article that analyzes anti-vaccination practices and offers strategies to encourage vaccination among vaccine-hesitant groups. After stints as a lifestyle host, news reporter and anchor at TV station NBC-22 in Springfield, MA, and TV station Fox 61 in Hartford, CT, Lauren is now a digital producer for Avelo Airlines. “My communication classes allowed me to hone my broadcasting skills, putting me in perfect position to advance my career after graduation.”

Brian Magna ’83
CEO

Brian Magna ’83

“At first, I wanted to be a dentist, but along the way, Coach Clyde Washburn opened my eyes to athletic training, physical therapy and the spirit of teamwork. Today, I own my own sports medicine business. Students need to take advantage of all that Eastern has to offer to make the most of their education in preparation for future careers.”

Ian Peters ’16
Management Analyst

Ian Peters ’16

Economics major Ian Peters is a management analyst for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources. “The faculty at Eastern care so much about their students. If you’re struggling, they work with you outside of class. If you’re looking for more advanced material, you can take on an independent study project. Faculty at larger research universities are too invested in their own work to take that sort of time for students.”

Fatima Godina
Psychology

Fatima Godina ’22

Fatima co-authored a published article on dual language learners in preschool classrooms. “As a dual language learner myself, it was really interesting to be part of this study. This experience really sparked an interest in the field of research. I love learning, and I think that’s one of the main things that you do as a researcher — you just never stop learning.”

Milton Jackson ’15
History and Social Science

Milton Jackson ’15

Milton is Vice President, Head of Customer Growth, The Hartford. “I attribute my success to the multitude of Eastern faculty and staff who provided me guidance and mentorship during and after graduation.”

Public Health Technician

Precious Baker ’17

Health Sciences major Precious Baker is an emergency department technician at Hartford Healthcare after earning her master’s degree in public health from UConn. “Eastern’s health sciences program taught me the foundations of public health and developed my writing and critical thinking skills.”

Andrew Meagher
Sport and Leisure Management

Andrew Meagher ’22

Andrew is the promotions coordinator for the Hartford Yard Goats. His job covers everything from branding to community appearances to social meeting and overseeing mascots. His course with Professor Charlie Chatterton was “monumental — my favorite course at Eastern.” It helped him start as an intern with the Yard Goats, and “amplified my career goals.”

Sierra Colon ’17
Political Science

Sierra Colon ’17

Sierra is academic services coordinator at the University of Connecticut’s Hartford campus. She interned in South Africa for the Surplus People Project, a nonprofit organization that supports farm workers. “Traveling abroad is very valuable. By living in another culture you start to understand other viewpoints, which expands your knowledge of how the world works.”
