Break Closings & Break Housing

The residence halls close for regularly scheduled breaks throughout the year: Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Break. Below, you can view the details of each closure, what students are expected to complete before leaving for break, and options for break housing. 

Break Housing: should a student have campus housing needs during a break, they may request break housing in the MyHousing Portal. Please see the due dates for applications and costs associated with each break below.
  • Thanksgiving Break 2025: Closing & Housing Details

    • Residence Halls Closing: Burr, Burnap, Constitution, Crandall, Niejadlik, Mead, and Winthrop

    • Date and Time of Closure: Tuesday, November 25th at 6:00pm
      All students living in the listed halls above must leave before the date and time of closure. All electronic key access is automatically turned off and the Housing & Residential Life Staff will begin closing procedures and inspections at this time.
      • Students With a Tuesday Night Class:  Students who have a Tuesday night class that either ends or starts after 6:00pm are NOT expected to skip class. Students should complete their pre-break expectations and be packed before class and then should attend class. These students will have up to a half hour after their class releases to then leave the residence hall for break. To request this extension, submit a Thanksgiving Break Housing Application in the MyHousing Portal.
    • Date and Time of Reopening: Sunday, November 30th at 10:00am
      Electronic key access to the closed halls will automatically turn on at the date and time above. Students may return at their leisure after halls reopen. Residence Hall Offices will reopen and Staff will be available starting at 7:00pm. Dining services will resume at 5:00pm.

    Before leaving for break (all halls, open or closed)

    All rooms/suites/apartments/halls, open or closed, will be inspected by Housing & Residential Life Staff on Tuesday, November 25th starting at 6:00pm. Students leaving for break must complete the following before departing from campus. This is to prevent any issues of cleanliness or pests.

    • Remove all trash and recycling and dispose of in the dumpster outside.
      Residents will be charged $25 per bag removed by staff.
    • Unplug all electronics except personal refrigerators and campus-provided appliances.
    • Vacuum/sweep floors
    • Wipe down the counters, sinks, desks, shelves etc
    • Remove all open perishable foods.
      Leftovers, fruit, veggies, open cans/boxes of food.
    • Take home or wash your dirty laundry and linens.
    • Bring home anything on the prohibited items list.
      Visit your hall’s office before leaving for break to pick up anything you’ve had confiscated and don’t bring it back to campus! All confiscated items will be disposed of when the halls close for Winter Break on December 12th.

     

    Thanksgiving Break Housing

    Any student who needs to be on campus in a hall that is either open or closed, between November 25th at 6:00pm to November 30th  at 10:00am must complete a Thanksgiving Break Housing Application, found in the MyHousing Portal. The application will open on October 1st and is due November 21st at 4:00pm.
    In-season athletes on campus for practice or competition are required to also complete the Thanksgiving Break Housing Application by the deadline found above.

    • Meals During the Break:
      Hurley Hall and other dining services will be closed during the break. Students on campus for the break will be responsible for their own meals.

    • Student Support During the Break:
      If a student needs assistance, they may either visit their residence hall office. If the office is closed, students may call the phone number posted at the residence hall or call Campus Police: 860-465-5310. All University offices, except Campus Police, will be closed for observed holidays and on weekends.

    • Severe Weather Alerts:
      Students are to remain aware of severe weather alerts, watches, and warnings during the break. In such events, especially those that involve high winds, rain, or snow, students are encouraged to close all windows in their room/suite/apartment. Damages caused to University property may be subject to damage billing if a student neglects to adhere to these precautions.

    • Policies & Procedures:
      During the break, all policies, procedures, and guidelines in the Annual Housing contract, the student code of conduct, and any other such announced via the housing website and/or email are in effect during the break. This includes but is not limited to all alcohol/drug policies, quiet hour and courtesy hour policies, and guest policies. Violation of such will result in a student conduct process.   • Winter Break 2025: Closing & Housing Details

    • Residence Halls Closing: All Residence Halls
    • Date and Time of Closure: Friday, December 12th at 6:00pm
      All residence halls (first-year, transfer, and upper-level) will CLOSE at the date and time posted above. Students are expected to check out of their housing assignment with a Housing Staff Member within 24-hours of their last final exam, or before the date and time posted above, whichever occurs first.

    • Make Your Travel Plans Now:
      Review your class syllabi and the Fall 2025 Final Exam Schedule to plan when you need to check out of housing for Winter Break. Start making your travel plans now and create a weather back up plan in case we are impacted by inclement weather

    Before Leaving for Break

    Students are not expected to completely move out of their housing assignment unless they are requesting a Spring 2026 room change, graduating, transferring, or have been notified by the University that they are required to move out. Students may leave some belongings in their housing assignment, but it’s best to bring home any valuables.

    All students leaving for winter break are expected to complete the following before departing campus:

    • Entire space cleaned (including living room, bathroom, and kitchen in suites/apartments)
    • Floors are vacuumed or swept
    • Windows are closed and locked
    • All trash and recycling disposed of in the dumpster and recycling bins outside
      • Students will be charged $25 per bag of trash removed by Housing Staff during check out inspections.
    • All dirty laundry and linens either cleaned or brought home
    • All perishable and/or open food disposed of or brought home
    • Refrigerators:
      • Personal/Mini-Fridges must be unplugged, defrosted, cleaned, emptied, and left open before leaving for break. Defrosting a mini-fridge typically takes 24-hours for all ice to melt. Please plan ahead.
      • University provided refrigerators must stay plugged in, but the refrigerator must be completely emptied. Frozen goods may stay in the freezer.
      • All refrigerators, personal and University provided, will be opened, and inspected during check out inspections conducted by Housing Staff.
    • Valuables are packed and brought home:
      • Students are not required to completely move out for winter break, but anything of value or importance should leave with them when the halls close. Do not forget to pack:
        • Technology: computers, gaming consoles, chargers, speakers etc.
        • Medication
        • Anything of exceptional value: jewelry, sentimental items, high-value items etc.
      • Eastern Connecticut State University is not responsible for the loss or damage of any personal property at any time including during break closures.

    Every room/suite/apartment will be inspected by Housing Staff starting the date and time of the residence hall closure to ensure that the above has been completed and to maintain an accurate roster of students on campus for the break. Items a student could be billed for if they do not meet these expectations include:

    Trash or recycling left behind that staff need to remove

    $25 per bag of trash/recycling

    Room is not cleaned, windows are left open, perishable foods left behind etc.

    $25-$500 depending on issue or damages

    Student is still in the hall after December 13th at 6:00pm without submitting their Winter Break Housing Application.

    Checking Out for Winter Break

    All students are required to be checked out by a staff member for Winter Break. Students need to follow the procedures for checking out outlined by their Residence Hall Staff. Each residence hall will host information sessions during the RHA meetings, floor or building meetings, and will publish bulletin boards, door flyers, and emails to ensure all residents are aware of residence hall closing procedures.

    Failing to check out properly for winter break may result in a $25 improper check out fee.

    Winter Break Housing

    Students who need to stay on campus during the winter break are required to complete a Winter Break Housing Application, found in the MyHousing Portal. The Winter Break Housing Application will go live starting November 1st.

    Applications are due either by December 10th, or at least 3 business days prior to a student’s return to campus. Please remember that University offices will be closed on December 25th, January 1st  and on weekends. Applications will not be reviewed when the University is closed.

    To qualify for winter break housing, a student must have all holds on their account removed and be registered for Spring 2026 classes.

    • Winter Break Housing Rates:
      Winter Break Housing costs $364 per week. Students may sign up for winter break housing for a week at a time and may request as many weeks of housing as needed. Reduced break housing rates are available for students:
      • With on-campus employment working shifts during the break (off-campus employment does not qualify for the reduced rate)
      • In-season athletes in active practice or competition (out of season athletes do not qualify for the reduced rate)
      • Students registered for class (reduced rate only applied to weeks the class is in session)

  • Spring 2026 Early Arrival Housing Details

    Spring 2026 move in starts on January 18th. If a student leaves for winter break, and needs to move in after January 1st but before Spring 2026 opening weekend, they may request early arrival housing by submitting the Winter Break & Spring Early Arrival Housing Application in the MyHousing Portal

    • When is Early Arrival Housing? January 1st to January 17th
    • How Do I Request Early Arrival Housing?
      Submit a Winter Break & Early Arrival Housing Application in the MyHousing Portal.
    • When is the application due? 
      Applications must be submitted at least 3-business days prior to a student's arrival. Same-day requests cannot be honored, and applications are not reivewed or responded to when the Univesrity is closed or on weekends.After applying for Early Arrival Housing, the student will receive a message in their Eastern inbox that the application has been received. A second message from a member of the Housing team will be sent to the student within 2 business days either approving or denying the student's request.
    • How much does Early Arrival Housing cost?
      Early Arrival Housing is $52 per night. Waivers and reduced costs may be offered to students
      • With on-campus employment working shifts during the break (off-campus employment does not qualify for the reduced rate)
      • In-season athletes in active practice or competition (out of season athletes do not qualify for the reduced rate)
      • Students registered for class (reduced rate only applied to weeks the class is in session)
    • If approved for Early Arrival Housing, when do I move in?
      Students approved for Early Arrival Housing may arrive on the day they request between 7:00pm and 10:00pm. Housing staff will not be avaiable any other time to check students in.
      • New Students (never lived on campus before): If you are a new student or you’ve never lived on campus before, you will be picking up your keys during your check in, either with your coach/supervisor/advisor or from the Resident Assistant on duty, depending on your specific move-in instructions.
      • Returning students who lost their fob: If you lived on campus last semester or last year, and you do not have a fob or lost your fob, you will need to coordinate a fob pick up with Card Services during their business hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am – 4:00pm). Card Services will NOT be open overnight or on the weekends and fobs can only be made and picked up during their business hours. Please plan accordingly.
