Resident Assistant - Selection

The RA position offers new and exciting advancements in leadership, communication, counseling and public service skills.

As the largest staff on Eastern's campus we work together to create an inclusive, supportive and fun community to pair with a student's academic goals.

Requirements to apply

  • Have earned at least 24 credit hours at the start of employment.
  • Have achieved and maintained a minimum 2.7 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
  • Be in good judicial standing with the Office of Student Conduct (no responsible findings for the 5 months prior to hiring).
  • The Resident Assistant position waivers may impact your financial aid package, each RA at the time of offer is required to meet with a Financial Aid staff member to learn impacts of the position on their aid.


Required Participation

  • Be able to attend all trainings as established by the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
    • Summer Training is typically 2 weeks prior to the start of the fall semester.
    • Winter Training is typically 1 week prior the start of the spring semester.
    • Training dates are announced to RAs and they are expected to be able to participate in all days of training.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Assist with opening and closing of residence hall(s)
  • Minimal Night and Weekend Commitments

What does an RA do and what are some of their responsibilities?

  • Providing a safe and secure environment.
  • Perform rounds throughout the assigned residence hall.
  • Be aware of mood, activities, and health of the people in the building.
  • Assist visitors entering the residence halls.
  • Address and document policy violations through Incident Reports and Housing Warning Letters.
  • Record pertinent information in the hall duty log.
  • Report maintenance problems and enter work orders.
  • Help to maintain courtesy and quiet hours.
  • Address the needs and concerns of residents as they arise.
  • While on-duty, remain in the residence hall "on-call" from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on designated duty nights (approximately 10 nights per month).
  • Help establish an educational and inclusive environment within the residence hall
  • Identify and assist individual residents with academic, roommate, and personal issues.
  • Act as a referral source for students to the appropriate university personnel.
  • Facilitate educational and social programming.
  • Facilitate a Peer Success Group on an approved topic.
  • Attend events sponsored by floor, staff, and community.
  • Enforce, support, and adhere to the rules and regulations of the University.
  • Assist with general administrative duties (i.e. health and safety inspections, lockouts, RA selection).
  • Disseminate information to residents (i.e. floor meetings, bulletin boards, etc.)
  • Assisting in research approved by housing.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by professional staff

RA Informational Sessions
Students interested in applying for the Resident Assistant position are required to attend at least one (1) information session:

  • October 17, 2023 at 7:00pm in the Student Center Theatre
  • November 1, 2023 at 1:00pm in the Student Center 219
  • November 16, 2023 at 4:00pm in the Student Center Theatre
  • December 4, 2023 at 6:00pm in the Student Center Theatre
  • January 3, 2024 at 11:00am on-line
  • January 12, 2024 at 3:00pm on-line
  • January 23, 2024 at 7:00pm in the Student Center Theatre

Fantastic Friday
All candidates are required to participate in "Fantastic Friday", a group-dynamic interview. Fantastic Friday has been scheduled for Friday, February 2, 2024, 3:00pm - 6:30pm. Candidates will receive information regarding Fantastic Friday via Eastern email.


Individual Interviews:

Individual interviews are February 5th - 14th, 2024. Candidates will receive information on scheduling an individual interview at a later time.
