Acclaimed Bolivian Author Visits Eastern

The flyer of our guest Bolivian Author Rodrigo Urquiola at the University Hour at Eastern

Back this November I gave our guests Rodrigo Urquiola and Shaina Brassard a campus tour, showcasing the wonderful facilities and opportunities available at Eastern. Rodrigo Urquiola, a writer visiting the United States for the first time, was here to share his story and promote his great new book, "Ayer El Fuego," (Yesterday’s Fire) with students and faculty members.

During one of our University Hour events, this special guest and his translator, Shaina Brassard were surrounded by a panel of six Eastern students, me included in the student theater. It was a great opportunity for us to interact with this author and also understand the challenging work of a translator.

Rodrigo and Shaina also discussed how literature serves as a powerful tool for self-expression and a means of promoting social change. Rodrigo shared that he comes from a low-income family in a country that does not prioritize aid for impoverished communities. He expressed his frustration, stating, "I live in a country where the rich become richer, and the poor become even poorer." His words resonated with me in a deep way.

He also shared the challenges he faces in focusing on his true passion, writing stories, since this activity barely provides financial support for him and his family. Nonetheless, his motivation to continue writing stems from his desire to inspire others, showcase his talent, and advocate for social change. He also introduced his new project, which involves translating his works into English. This initiative aims to broaden his readership and offer insights not only into his life but also into the rich culture of Bolivia.

I truly believe that Rodrigo Urquiola inspired us Eastern students not only because of his profound knowledge about Bolivia, a highly complex country and society, but also through his powerful message: your dreams can become reality through dedication and hard work, as you never know when a door to your goals and dreams will open.
