Aiming at Law School as a student Scholar of the Connecticut Legal Bar Association

Katherine Esclante

As a first-generation Political Science and Philosophy student, going to law school has always been a dream of mine. Now, thanks to the Connecticut Legal Bar Association (CBA), I am one step closer to fulfilling that dream. I excitedly announce that I have been selected as a CBA Future of the Legal Profession Scholar! Through my selection, I have been provided mentorship and study material resources that I am grateful and excited to use in my journey to law school.

The CBA program reached my radar early this spring after a Political Science Honor Society meeting where one of my peers, Isabelle Lastrina (2023 CBA Future of the Legal Profession Scholar), told me about her experience with the program and encouraged me to apply. Encouraged by a friend’s success, I did just that.

I have not always known that the law was the place for me; however, as an immigrant and DACA recipient, I have always been incredibly aware of the law’s impact on my life. With a law degree, I hope to serve as an information leader for people in my communities and work to demystify the legal field for those who need it most. In my future work, I hope to provide people around me with reliable legal knowledge and help bridge the gap between our legal system and the human stories that often go unheard.

At the same time, this journey will be uniquely meaningful to me as I will be carrying on a generational dream. My father aspired to be a lawyer in his home country of El Salvador, but he could not realize his dream due to family and financial obligations. Through his sacrifice and love for our family, I have been given the opportunity to consider going into the legal field today. As I step into this new era, I am inspired by his hard work and dedication and am thrilled to be able to carry it forward.

I'm incredibly thankful to the Connecticut Bar Association for the mentorship and resources it has provided me as a 2024 CBA Future of the Legal Profession Scholar. I am excited to utilize these resources and for all the future holds!
