Eastern’s Honor Society in Political Science wins a national grant for the second year in a row

The Political Science department is proud to announce that Alpha Beta Gamma, Eastern’s chapter of the National Honor Society in Political Science, has received a grant to hold student speaker series in the Spring of 2024. Pi Sigma Alpha is the only honor society for college and university students of political and social sciences in the United States. Its purpose is to recognize and promote high academic achievement in the field of political science. Members of the society are inducted based on their academic merit and leadership and meet at least once a month to discuss the political happenings on campus and across the nation & globe as well as plan events on campus. The executive board is currently led by Katherine Escalante, Marcel Vicente, William Engle, Isabelle Lastrina, and Alessandra Ballestas and was able to secure a grant from the Pi Sigma Alpha National Office for the second year in a row. This grant is open to national competition due to the limited funding, so receival of this grant is a high accomplishment.

Thanks to this great achievement, members of the honor society will host a student presentation series that will encourage scholarship among students in the Political Science field. This will provide the opportunity to practice important presentation and public speaking skills in front of a supportive and familiar audience. The presentation series will include a competitive aspect which will incentivize students to submit their best work, and financially help undergraduate students actively contributing to the Political Science field. There has been much success from Pi Sigma Alpha from hosting local debates to promoting national voter registration in the recent past. Therefore, the student speaker series will build on that success and provide additional opportunities catered toward the political science field and the wider academic community.
