Coding by Preschoolers: Study of their Socio-Emotional and Programming Behaviors and Impact on their Math Abilities

2023

Principal Investigator: Sudha Swaminathan
Student Researchers: Haley DelMonaco, Katie Pascarella

The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) To determine the impact of programming exercises on preschoolers’ math abilities and 2) To analyze their socio-emotional and programming behaviors and expressions. The study will be conducted in our campus preschool. Two of the classrooms will serve as the experimental group and the other two as the control group. All preschoolers’ math abilities will be evaluated using TEAM, before and after five guided programming sessions. Children’s programming sessions will be video-recorded and analyzed using two different scales to discern their socio-emotional and programming expressions and behaviors.
