The Women's Center (WC) fosters a space of belonging through affirming and honoring the experiences of women and supporting justice and equity for all. Using an intersectional framework, we facilitate community partnerships, an ongoing calendar of programs, crisis services, and resources all designed to effectively champion gender equity and combat gender-based violence. The Women’s Center is part of the Arthur L. Johnson Unity Wing, which also includes the Pride Center and Intercultural Center.
Sexual misconduct is a sobering reality on today’s U.S. college campuses. In response, prevention programs and victim support services continue to be implemented and expanded to promote campus safety and positive interpersonal relationships. At Eastern Connecticut State University, a formal structure has been created — the President’s Advisory Board on Interpersonal Violence and Campus Climate — to lead the University’s efforts in supporting healthy relationships while deepening the campus’s culture of inclusion, personal responsibility, and positive life choices.
The Women’s and Gender Studies program at Eastern hosted a conversation with award-winning Afghan writer and women’s rights advocate Homeira Qaderi on Nov. 12 at Webb Hall. Qaderi discussed resilience, loss, and the realities of being a woman under Taliban rule and shared how storytelling allowed her to show resistance against her oppressors.
Students gathered at the Student Center Betty Tipton Room on Oct. 8 to celebrate womanhood and community. Hosted by the Women’s Center at Eastern, HERfest included activities and food by various women-owned businesses and performances by on- and off-campus organizations.
