A Hotbed of Patriotism

Eastern Connecticut’s role in the founding of America

If there was an epicenter of the American Revolution in Connecticut, it may well have been eastern Connecticut. In the years before and during the Revolutionary War, the region produced numerous revolutionaries and soldiers who helped turn colonial resistance into a fight for independence.

The Man Behind Occum Hall

Samson Occom, a pillar of Mohegan history

Since the 1980s, the monolithic Occum Hall has been a cornerstone of the University’s north campus. What most people don’t know, however, is the historic figure the residence hall is named after: Samson Occom, a prominent 18th-century Mohegan tribal leader, author, and minister from eastern Connecticut.

How new HR technologies impact the recruitment process

Savannah Striano ’25 was excited for her first full-time job interview. To her surprise, when she logged in to the virtual interview, she wasn’t greeted by a person, but by a series of fast-moving minigames. … “School prepared me with interpersonal skills for interviews with humans,” she said, “not robots.”

The Teachers Among Us

Eastern’s tradition of preparing exceptional educators continues

Eastern’s deepest roots are in education, having first opened its doors in 1889 as the Willimantic State Normal School. Today’s alumni continue that legacy, with several earning recognition this past academic year as top teachers in their respective districts.

20 years of the Child and Family Development Resource Center

When a group of toddlers walks into the playroom at the Margaret S. Wilson Child and Family Development Resource Center (CFDRC), they may seem like typical preschoolers — curious, noisy, and busy — but the CFDRC is no ordinary preschool. It functions as an early learning center, a launchpad for future teachers, and a laboratory where researchers capture insights that could change how educators understand early learning.

Navigating Our Journey Ahead

There is an unmistakable energy at Eastern right now. This fall, we welcomed the largest incoming class in the University’s history. Seeing these students arrive was a powerful reminder of the confidence students and families place in Eastern and the enduring appeal of the distinctive education we provide. Helping us steer their experience is the University’s new Strategic Compass.
