LaToya Smith ’06

Communication and History Double Major

LaToya is an award-winning multimedia journalist and CEO of Brass City Media, a New York City-based content marketing agency she launched in 2014. Brass City Media is a content marketing agency that supports financial services companies create compelling marketing pieces and build relationships in the process. 

“Eastern gave me the experience and training I needed to adapt to this rapidly changing industry. I learned how to edit video using Final Cut Pro — a program that I still use to edit client projects today — and I got a true multimedia education through Eastern’s course offerings in television (both studio and field production), radio and public relations. Writing and serving as a copy editor for the Campus Lantern also gave me the work experience and portfolio I needed to excel in graduate school and beyond.”

LaToya is also a tech correspondent on, an online edutainment show that discusses technology for business, technology trends and related topics. She covers startups, nonprofits and wearable technology.

Prior to founding Brass City Media, LaToya held several positions with BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine, starting as an editorial assistant and working her way up as editor of the magazines' second largest franchises—Wealth for Life and Financial Fitness. She was also an on-air correspondent for the nationally syndicated television show, Our World with Black Enterprise and has written for JET and Essence Magazine. 

In 2016, LaToya was selected to participate in participate in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses initiative in partnership with the Tory Burch Foundation, a competitive business education program for women entrepreneurs. In 2019, LaToya was recognized by the Small Business Administration as Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the New York region.

At Eastern, in addition to graduating magna cum laude, LaToya was elected to both the Leadership and History honor societies at Eastern and received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Award her senior year.  She earned her M.S. in print journalism with distinction from Boston University in 2008. While studying at Boston University, she worked as a Statehouse reporter covering Massachusetts’s government and politics.
