Daniel Slayton ’24

Dan received his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Eastern in 2024, and got his master’s degree in accounting at Eastern in 2025. He is a staff auditor at Fiondella, Milone, & LaSaracina LLP located in Glastonbury CT.

“I am an external auditor, so while my workday can vary depending on client needs, the basis of my job is to gain an understanding of my clients so that I can assess the riskiness (inherent and otherwise) associated with their business. Once I have an understanding of the business’s risk profile, I can apply statistical theories, such as sampling, in order to make an assumption about the population. This involves requesting documents and proof that events occurred in order to ensure the client’s financial statements are accurate at the end of their fiscal year.

“In layman’s terms, any given day, I may be conferencing with my clients, documenting and testing supporting schedules and paperwork provided to us from the client, and working with my teams to ensure our methodology is in accordance with GAAS/GAAP.”

Why did you choose Eastern to attend college?

“I was a transfer student from Manchester Community College who was in search of a university to finish my four-year degree. Upon review of online reviews, and thorough discussion with friends who were attending Eastern at the time or had attended in the past, I found that especially for the accounting program, Eastern was the best education for the best price and in the best location for me.”

Who were your faculty mentors?

“Without a doubt, Dr. Mohd Rujoub was the secret to success for me. While many students may complain that his tests are hard or classes long, Moe takes his time to ensure that his students don’t just understand the textbook, but the logic behind them. Anyone can do Assets = Liabilities + Equity, but why is that the equation.” Moe takes the time to explain the why behind the what. His Accounting Banquets and job fairs are the reason why I got my job at FML. He is awesome!!”

“I also would just like to mention Professor Heather Capalbo; she turned what could have been rather tedious classes into fun learning experiences, and really made sure her students were retaining the information presented to them.”

How did Eastern prepare you for your career?

“To sum this up in a single sentence ‘Strength is never in the height of the walls, but in the depth of what they rest on.’ Quite often we are applying the COSO framework and analyzing process narratives, sometimes multiple times a day. These were things taught in our accounting classes that were not included in the textbooks. I think this fact alone highlights the dedication that Eastern professors have to ensure the future success of their students.”

“Contrary to popular belief, auditing is an extremely fast-paced career, which requires a deep understanding of accounting principles logic from day one. If I hadn’t acquired these skills at Eastern, I would never have been able to pick up these skills so swiftly on the job.”
