Friday, February 21 is International Mother Language Day, a day designated by UNESCO to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity.
The World Languages and Cultures Department along with the Intercultural Center, the J. Eugene Smith Library, the Departments of Political Science, English and Computer Science, and with support from the Office of Equity and Diversity, is hosting a special event in the Student Center Café on Friday, February 21 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.
Students, staff and faculty can sample snacks from around the world, partake in a language scavenger hunt, snap pictures in a photo booth, play interactive games related to languages and music videos, and test their knowledge of world languages with a Trivia Contest at 11 am.
Chartwells will be serving international foods in its dining facilities, and they have partnered with a specialty food vendor, Global Village Foods, to bring authentic African cuisine to campus that day.
To gear up for the festivities, the campus community can tune into a collaborative world music playlist on Spotify. Anyone can add their favorites to the playlist by DMing @EasternWorldLanguages on Instagram.
Our sincere gratitude goes out to Maria F. Arredondo, a senior majoring in Art and minoring in Medical Interpreting in Spanish, for designing the artwork for Eastern’s International Mother Language Day poster.
