Shelter in Place if there is an emergency situation. Shelter in place is appropriate when conditions outside are unsafe and a higher degree of protection is available inside. Officials are likely to instruct people to shelter in place when suspicious activity or crime has been reported near campus, a severe weather condition is imminent, or an explosion or chemical spill releases toxic dust, fumes, radiation, or chemicals outside. Exterior doors to University buildings may be locked.
