Standard 1

Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Dispositions

All initial undergraduate candidates must complete the university's required Liberal Arts Core Curriculum and content courses related to their major, and the EPP expects all applicants to our program to have a GPA of 3.0. We also require all candidates (undergraduate and graduate) to pass select courses in English, History, Sciences, Mathematics and Arts with a grade of C or higher. These practices ensure that all of our candidates have a strong and diverse content knowledge, which is specifically measured at four distinct points in the teacher education program: entry; admission to student teaching; during student teaching; program exit.

Coursework integrate the knowledge and skills related to student learning from the Connecticut Common Core of Teaching (CCCT) and monitor candidate progress carefully. They are aligned with relevant NCATE, CAEP, and SPA standards. The CCCT indicators are the focal point of carefully selected field assessments including observations of candidates in the field and clinical practices. Ten CCCT indicators are selected to monitor candidate progress in their development of knowledge and skills pertinent to their ability to affect student learning.

Professional dispositions of all candidates are measured at admission during the interview process. During coursework and during fieldwork, candidates are expected to maintain and demonstrate strict adherence to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibilities.

Several items in the pre-student teaching and student teaching evaluation capture data pertinent to professional dispositions. These are aligned with the Connecticut Common Core of Teaching (CCCT) and clearly articulate the professionalism expected of all our teacher candidates. Candidates are not permitted to proceed through the program unless they demonstrate proficiency in the professional indicators.
