6.1.d

6.1.d Unit Facilities

Summarize campus and school facilities to support candidates in meeting standards, including
support for use of technology in teaching and learning.

The Eastern campus is well equipped with classroom, library and other student-centered spaces and
resources to support our candidates in their pursuit of knowledge and skills related to teacher education.
All campus classrooms have been upgraded to SMART rooms with the capacity to integrate needed
audio, video and other resources seamlessly and efficiently into the learning and teaching process. Many
faculty utilize these facilities to conduct flipped classrooms, as appropriate. The Eastern campus has
been digitally upgraded in the last few years to enable strong wi-fi capacity in all residence halls and
buildings, including mobile access.

The Eastern library houses needed print materials for all content areas and maintains a daily connection
with other Connecticut libraries to provide access to their resources to our candidates. Specifically, the
Curriculum Center at the library serves to support the EPP and its P-12 teacher preparation programs
with reference assistance and access to materials that are both physical and digital. The Curriculum
Center Director liaises with EPP faculty during a dedicated Fall luncheon meeting and on a as needed
basis thereafter. Additionally, the library offers study spaces with computers and lounges that encourage
individual and group study. Eastern library also houses the Academic Services Center and the Advising
Center. The former offers tutoring services in Math, Writing and content areas to struggling students and
offers learning materials for basic test assessments.

Advising Center provides a variety of advising and academic support services for full-time
undergraduate students and incoming First-Time and Transfer students. Under Eastern's dual advising
model, first-time students with less than-45 credits, transfer students with fewer than 30 credits,
STEP/CAP (Summer Transition at Eastern Program/Contract Admission Program) participants and
student-athletes are assigned to both a faculty and professional advisor. The Center educates students
about their academic responsibility; academic programs, policies and procedures, integrating available
resources at the University, and strategies for addressing their academic and personal concerns. In
addition, the Center collaborates with the various academic departments to coordinate the University's
faculty advising system.

EPP courses are taught in accessible campus buildings including the Webb Classroom Building
(classroom and computer technology lab spaces), Goddard and the Science Buildings (computer
technology lab space and science labs), Sports Center (physical education space and equipment) and the
Center for Early Childhood Education (computer technology lab space and the capacity to observe
preschool classrooms through remote video technology). EPP follows the lead and suggestions from the
Office of AccessAbility Services to meet the educational needs of all candidates. The Office offers
services to support the educational experiences of documented and temporary disabilities and provides
faculty and candidates with the resources and the knowledgebase needed to have an optimum learning
experience. Annually a number of EPP candidates avail themselves of relevant services.

In its current Master Plan and plans for the next round of university-wide revisions, the focus remains
student-centered with the primary goal to facilitate the smooth transition from classroom to residences
and a sustainable campus that invites engaged learning. In keeping with the university's mission to
support the EPP, a new building for the School is included in the upcoming Master Plan.
