6.1.a

6.1.a Unit Leadership and Authority

Summarize unit's leadership and authority in the design, delivery, operations of all programs at the
institution for the preparation of educators and other school professionals.

Eastern EPP is housed in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Eastern Connecticut State
University and falls under the leadership of its Dean. The Dean has the authority to lead, administer and
implement governance over the programmatic offerings of the School. The Dean currently also serves as
Eastern's Certification Officer. The EPP faculty are spread across two departments: Education (EDU)
and Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE). Each department has its own Chair and Associate Chair
who are responsible for the internal operations, budget, scheduling and staffing. Each education program
is led by a program coordinator who oversees the course sequencing, staffing and program assessments.
Select EPP faculty also serve as liaison to faculty in the Arts and Sciences content areas. These liaisons
are responsible for sharing certification updates and programmatic changes.

The EPP is supported in its operations by a department secretary, a CARE (Committee for Admissions
and Retention in Education) coordinator, the Coordinator of Educational and Clinical Experiences and
the TK20 database management administrator, and in part, by the Accreditation, Certification and
Recruitment officer for the School of Education and Professional Studies.

The EPP faculty are responsible for program planning, curriculum, assessments and implementation.
Faculty stay abreast of state and national standards of expectations for their program and make
appropriate changes as needed. The CARE coordinator is responsible for intake, advising and
management of admissions and retention data of all teacher candidates. The Coordinator of Educational
and Clinical Experiences is responsible for the placement of all field and clinical experiences, staffing
and overseeing the university supervisors, monitoring effectiveness of all field and clinical experiences
and serving as a liaison between the university and P-12 schools. The TK20 administrator is responsible
for maintaining the database, data collection and analyses, including training of faculty and staff.

The Dean is supported in his work by the Dean's Cabinet and the Graduate Division Advisory Council.
The former is comprised of Chairs of all departments within the School (Education, Economics,
Communication, Business and Kinesiology and Physical Education) and Assistant Deans. The Dean's
Cabinet meets once a month and assists the Dean with policy and school-wide operations. The Graduate
Division Advisory Council includes the Assistant Dean, Vice-President for Equity and Diversity and
select faculty representatives from the graduate programs. The Council meets once a semester or more
often, as needed. The Council advises the Dean on policy, practices and development of the Graduate
Division.

Each department holds a meeting once a month for its faculty to discuss, share, determine departmentwide
improvements. The CARE committee meets once a month as well, and is attended by a
representative from all certification programs and the CARE coordinator. Issues discussed include
candidate admission and retention issues and policy changes. EPP faculty liaisons to Arts and Sciences
meet with those departments as needed. Each Fall, the EPP holds a gathering of all liaisons and their
departments to share results analyses on standardized tests and to update the departments on certification
changes. The Dean meets with Superintendents of Schools each Fall to receive and share data, policy
updates and program needs.
