5.1.e Unit Evaluation of Professional Education Faculty Performance

Summarize unit's expectations for and evaluations of its professional education faculty regarding
faculty performance.

EPP faculty performance are evaluated as per the guidelines established by the AAUP Collective
Bargaining Agreement, Section 4.10 and 4.11. Prior to tenure status, full-time faculty are evaluated
annually for renewal. Once tenured, faculty are evaluated at the time of each application for promotion
and every six years. The AAUP contract (section 4.11.9) describes the evaluation procedures, including
timeline and criteria.

Faculty performance is evaluated in four major areas. First is teaching or 12 load credits which could
include supervision of teacher candidates, chair responsibilities, special assignments as determined by
the Dean or research release time. At the time of their evaluation, faculty are expected to describe and
document the effectiveness of their work pertinent to their load credits. Faculty are also afforded peer
evaluation feedback on their teaching. Second is creative activity which includes publications and
presentations stemming from research and other creative work. Faculty submit papers, conference
proceedings, presentations, conference booklets as evidence of their productivity. Third is service to the
department and the university. Included is this criteria are committee work both within the EPP and for
the university at large. Included in this criteria are leadership roles played by the faculty at local/regional
organizations and for their professional associations. Faculty describe their service commitments by
outlining their roles, responsibilities, accomplishments and goals. The fourth criteria is professional
activity, which includes membership in professional associations, participation and attendance at
conferences.

Renewal process for tenure-track faculty includes evaluations and feedback provided to the faculty
candidates by the Department Evaluation Committee (DEC), the Dean and the Provost. Tenure and
promotion processes include the university's Promotion and Tenure Committee, the President of the
university and the Board of Regents. Sixth year professional assessment of tenured faculty follow the
renewal process. Faculty mentors work informally with all junior faculty to guide and support their
renewal and tenure applications.
