5.1.a

5.1.a Qualified Faculty

Summarize unit's expectations for and evaluations of its professional education faculty, schoolbased
faculty, and university clinical faculty regarding faculty qualifications.

The teacher preparation programs at Eastern are housed within two departments, Education (EDU) and
Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE). All faculty in EDU and select faculty in KPE who teach in
the certification programs together make up the composition of all EPP faculty at Eastern. Together,
there are a total of 18 faculty and other personnel in these departments who are directly involved in the
teaching, mentoring and support of our teacher candidates. We have nine Full Professors and four
Associate Professors, all of whom are tenured. At the tenure-track, Assistant Professor level, we have
four faculty. We also have a full-time Coordinator of Educational and Clinical Experiences, which is a
non-faculty position with the privilege of teaching a limited number of courses, as needed. See exhibit
for a table of all faculty, their current titles, their dates of hire, tenure status, promotion status and years
of service. While a majority of our faculty are tenured and have more than 10 years of experience each,
we also have had 4 faculty retire, who have been honored with the title of Professor Emeriti. All of our
current, full-time faculty have a terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in their cognate area, have several
years of experience in P-12 school settings, are active in their field of scholarship and provide service to
the university, the community and their professional associations. The faculty information at AIMS
provides a detailed list of the faculty, their background, experiences and scholarly activities. Adjunct
faculty and university supervisors have been designated as part-time faculty, whereas tenured and
tenure-track faculty, including the Coordinator of Educational and Clinical Experiences hold full-time
appointments. See tables outlining the qualifications of a sample current pool of supervisors and
cooperating teachers.

Faculty evaluations are conducted as per the schedule and criteria established by the AAUP Collective
Bargaining Agreement (contract). Please see relevant sections (specifically 4.10 and 4.11 on
page 21) from the contract that pertain to evaluations of faculty. Tenured faculty are evaluated every
six years and are expected to provide documentation of their teaching, creative activity, service and
professional activities. These are evaluated by the Department Evaluation Committee (DEC), the Dean
of the School of Education and Professional Studies, and the Provost of Academic Affairs. Newly
appointed, tenure-track faculty are evaluated every year and are expected to provide similar
documentation of their teaching, creative activity, service and professional activity. They are evaluated
similarly with each reviewer providing feedback and guidance to the faculty for further development.
Additionally, we have two personnel serving the EPP: The Coordinator of Educational and Clinical
Experiences who is responsible for overseeing all field and clinical experiences and the University
Assistant for Data Management, responsible for administration and maintenance of our TK20 database.
The former is a retired school principal with 20+ years of P-12 school experience supervising and
mentoring teachers and candidates. The latter holds a doctoral degree in data management, statistical and
qualitative research and is particularly adept at managing assessment and placement data. Performance
of these two personnel are reviewed annually by the Dean, with feedback from the faculty. Criteria for
their evaluation is directly related to their responsibilities.

Adjunct faculty serve the EPP on one-year or semester-by-semester contracts. They are hired to teach a
course or two each semester, amounting to no more than 8 credits or two teaching assignments (AAUP
contractual stipulations); university supervisors who are hired to supervise field and clinical experiences
of candidates in the certification areas that fall within their background and experience. All adjunct
faculty are interviewed by program faculty and the chair of the department prior to being assigned a
teaching assignment. Adjunct faculty are required to hold at least a master's degree in an appropriate
field of study and have several years of experience in P-12 schools, as well as in teaching in higher
education, which is preferred. Adjunct faculty are mentored and supervised by the department chair.
Course evaluations are used as the criteria for evaluating their performance. Additionally, several P-12
school personnel serve as mentors and supervisors of candidates in the field. University supervisors are
typically retired P-12 school personnel with several years of experience teaching and mentoring in the
grade levels and subject areas of their assignments. Several hold administrative degrees and/or
certifications. P-12 school personnel who serve as cooperating teachers typically hold a master's degree
in their field or are working towards a master's degree. They are required to hold a minimum of a
provisional certificate for their discipline area and must have successfully completed the TEAM training
(Connecticut's Teacher Education and Mentoring Program). See description of the TEAM
program. University supervisors are evaluated by the Coordinator of Educational and Clinical
Experiences using, in part, feedback from candidates and field observations (effective fall 2016).
Cooperating teachers are evaluated as per the school's criteria for professional development which
includes the policies related to mentor selection and training.
