Captioning Accommodation

As the Office of AccessAbility Services (OAS) continues to strive to remain current with Best Practices and in compliance with federal mandates for accessibility, the OAS would like to request that faculty members consider showing movies and DVDs that already have the closed captioning option, in the event that a student who is deaf or hard of hearing is registered for your class.

If you have a student in your class who is required to have captioning, you will have received a Letter of Accommodation from the OAS, stating so. In this case, if you plan to show a DVD/movie that is not already captioned, please provide the OAS with the DVD/movie as soon as possible and the OAS will attempt to have it captioned. The OAS is required to request and be granted permission by the owner of the DVD/movie before it can be sent to the captioning service. As one can imagine, this process may take quite a while.

The following is quoted from Pepnet2 (PN2):

"Per the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, course materials must be provided in an accessible format for students with disabilities. For students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, this means presenting audio content as text. The most accessible way to provide the text is to add time synced captions to the video. Methods used to add captions vary by media."
