Biology

Students will receive a writing grade on completion of BIO 120, 130, 220, and 230. After completing all four courses a cumulative grade will be assessed, and students will be informed if they have earned credit for the Intermediate Writing requirement. Transfer students entering as sophomores will be judged on their writing in BIO 220 and 230. Students who do not earn credit for Intermediate Writing at this time will be required to complete additional writing assignments in every upper-level course until the department is satisfied that they have met the required standard.

Biochemistry

Evaluation of lab reports written in BIO 220 and 230 will meet this requirement for the Biochemistry Major. Biochemistry majors will keep a portfolio of writing done for these courses and submit it to the Writing Committee for the Biochemistry Major in the Department of Physical Sciences. This Committee will evaluate these reports in terms of the quality of scientific writing contained in them. If a student does not pass, papers must be revised until the Committee is satisfied that the student has met the standard.
