The World Languages & Cultures Department is hosting a Scavenger Hunt of Languages across Eastern’s campus to celebrate International Mother Language Day (IMLD)!
The Scavenger Hunt begins on Tuesday, February 17. Students can race around campus to find 12 Checkpoints, each featuring a world language, and collectively showcasing the diversity of languages and cultures represented on campus. Students can share what they have found at each Checkpoint on Instagram by using the unique #IMLD26Eastern hashtag. Students that find all 12 Checkpoints by 12 pm on Monday, February 23 will be entered to win a prize!

Overview: Students have one week (February 17-23) to find 12 Checkpoints that are located across campus. Students that find all 12 Checkpoints and share selfies of themselves at each location, will be eligible to win a prize. Prize winners will be selected at random from all scavenger hunt finishers.
Step-by-step directions:
- Follow @EasternWorldLanguages on Instagram, and the WLC Dept will follow you back!
- Clues to each Checkpoint will be posted on Instagram and WLC Dept Highlights webpage on Tuesday, February 17.
- Follow the clues to each of the Checkpoints around campus. Checkpoints can be a variety of things – pieces of art, books, informational posters, etc. Each Checkpoint will feature a world language spoken by one or more people on campus.
- Take a selfie at each Checkpoint.
- Post each Checkpoint selfie on Instagram. Be sure to tag @EasternWorldLanguages and add the hashtag #IMLD26Eastern so that you can be entered to win a prize if you find all 12. Sharing helps your friends and fellow students learn about IMLD and the scavenger hunt fun.
- Remember to save your selfies on your device.
- At the final Checkpoint, scan the QR code and upload all 12 Checkpoint selfies to an online form to confirm your completion of the Scavenger Hunt.
- In order to be eligible to win one of the prizes, the Scavenger Hunt needs to be completed, and all selfies uploaded to the online form, by Monday, February 23 at 12 pm.
Join us in the Student Center Café on Monday, February 23 from 12-2:30 pm for a special International Mother Language Day event. The special event will feature a number of exciting and interactive language activities.
- Watch award-winning international short films – offering a quick glimpse of cinema and stories from around the world.
- Sample snacks and candies from different countries.
- Expand your vocabulary and learn simple phrases in other languages – win prizes for your efforts.
- Play common card games while learning new words, scripts and alphabets.
- Pick up one or two stickers with inspirational sayings in Spanish, Arabic, French, Japanese and other languages.
- Gather with your friends in an IMLD photobooth for a fun pics with expressions and saying in any language.
- Stay for the drawing of Scavenger Hunt prize winners. Winners will be selected at random from all Scavenger Hunt finishers at 2 pm. Winners do NOT need to be present to win.
