LGBTQIA+ Safe Zone Advocacy 101

The "LGBTQIA+ Safe Zone Advocacy 101" workshop aims to enhance the culture and climate of LGBTQIA+ inclusivity at Eastern Connecticut State University. This workshop provides foundational language and reflective practices to better understand the complexity of gender and sexual identity, as well as action steps to promote LGBTQIA+ inclusivity. This workshop runs ~120 minutes.

Participants will :

  • commit intentional time to explore LGBTQIA+ issues
  • reflect upon their sexual identity and gender identity
  • examine Eastern's culture and climate around LGBTQIA+ inclusivity
  • be provided resources and action-steps to promote LGBTQIA+ inclusivity among the Eastern community


Call Me by My Name & Pronouns: Gender Affirming Language

"Call Me by My Name & Pronouns: Gender Affirming Language" workshop addresses the use of third-person language in affirming gender identity. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of language that positively reinforces gender diversity and explore ways to address situations in which a person is misgendered. This workshop runs ~60 minutes.

Participants will:

  • be able to explain what pronouns are and how they can be used during introductions 
  • practice using pronouns  
  • explore ways to respond to situations when someone has been misgendered 
  • understand the harm of deadnaming and misgendering pronouns 
  • be familiar with Eastern’s Preferred First Name Policy 


Breaking the Binary: Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Identities

"Breaking the Binary: Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Identities" is a workshop that explores gender identities that exist outside of the gender binary of cis-male or cis-female. Cis is short for cisgender, meaning the sex assigned at birth (aka biological sex) is the same as a persons experience of their own gender (aka gender identity). This workshop runs ~60 minutes.

Participants will:

  • gain a fountational understanding of transgender, non-conforming, and gender bending identities
  • explore transition options and the transition process
  • be familiar with gender-affirming practices and resources

 

Fam2Fam: Supporting LGBTQ+ Family Members

"Fam2Fam: Supporting LGBTQ+ Family Members" is a workshop for loved ones of Eastern's LGBTQ+ students. This workshop runs ~60 minutes.

Participants will:

  • deepen their knowledge of LGBTQ+ identity
  • reflect upon their family's culture of LGBTQ+ inclusivity
  • explore the coming out process
  • be knowledgeable about resources and services available to families
