4.1.d

4.1.d Experiences Working with Diverse Students in P-12 Schools

Summarize opportunities and experiences for candidates to work with diverse students in P-12
schools; processes for the development of knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions related to
diversity; and outcomes based on key assessments during field experiences and clinical practice.

The EPP is in compliance with state statute of House Bill 7052 (j),section 10-145a governing the
duration and diversity of clinical experiences for programs leading to teacher certification." (j) On and
after July 1, [2015] (now 2016), any program of teacher preparation leading to professional certification
shall require, as part of the curriculum, clinical experience, field experience or student teaching
experience in a classroom of a school located in an alliance district, as defined in section 10-262u, and a
classroom of a school that is not located in an alliance district during four semesters of such program of
teacher preparation." The Alliance District program is a unique and targeted investment in Connecticut's
30 lowest-performing districts.

The Office of Educational and Clinical Experiences (OECE) systematically diversifies placement of
teacher candidates such that they have experience in diverse school districts. See document in exhibit
with demographics of the school districts that are included in the OECE's database. Schools vary in the
racial composition of their students, with several hosting a high number of Black and Hispanic
population. By systematically varying a teacher candidate's placement, the OECE ensures that our
candidates experience diverse grade levels, cultural groups, SES communities, and English language
learners. This process is maintained for all programs, both initial and advanced.
Professional dispositions related to diversity are not treated separately from other professional
dispositions. The topic is integrated within the focus on differentiation and respectful and sensitive
communication and interaction with students and families of a diverse background.
