Explora Español

Explora Español Fall 2023

The World Languages and Cultures Department hosts a special informational event, Explora Español, on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm in Webb 233B.

This event is specially geared toward first- and second-year students at Eastern that are heritage and native Spanish speakers.  The aim of Explora Español is to highlight unique benefits of studying Spanish in college for those that have a familiarity with the language.

Native and heritage Spanish speakers already possess valuable language skills; however, studying Spanish in a college setting offers rich educational experiences, such as the development of writing proficiency, exposure to and exploration of Hispanic literature and culture, and nuanced grammar instruction, all of which can improve and deepen a student’s command of the language.

Moreover, as the demand for bilingual and biliterate employees in the US labor market continues to grow, students equipped with collegiate and professional Spanish language skills, not just conversational skills, will have a marked and valuable advantage in future job searches.  A degree in Spanish can offer heritage and native speakers the credentials that employers often look for when evaluating future candidates’ talent.

At Explora Español, Dr. Chan, the Chair of the World Languages and Cultures Department, will highlight and discuss how students can easily pair a Spanish minor or major with other fields of study. Whether students are pursuing a health science, political science, communication, business, social work, criminology or another subject, a Spanish degree can enhance a student’s education and future prospects.  In addition to the inherent advantages that native and heritage language speakers possess with their current language skills, Dr. Chan will review other means available to students to accelerate their language study at Eastern, making it easier and more feasible to earn a double major in Spanish or a Spanish minor.

All native and heritage Spanish language students, and especially first and second year students, are encouraged to attend Explora Español to get more information about how to earn a degree in Spanish at Eastern and why that degree would be useful in their future.

Abuelita hot chocolate, churros with chocolate dipping sauce and chips and salsa will be on hand for munching.
