The Physical Sciences Department offers a major in Biochemistry that prepares students for careers in the biomedical, biotechnological, pharmaceutical, agricultural research and chemical industries, as well as university-affiliated research laboratories, hospital laboratories and government-sponsored research facilities. Minors in Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science are especially useful to future science teachers. The new Astronomy Outreach and Presentation minor prepares students to work in a public or school planetarium. The department also supports other academic programs with courses in astronomy, chemistry, physics and general science.

Shirzad Ahmadi

From wrestler to lecturer

October 11, 2022

Eastern physical sciences lecturer Shirzad Ahmadi’s résumé looks like it could belong to three different people. He has been a wrestling coach at several universities in New England, and he spent over 30 years as a high-school science teacher. Oh, and he has won national and world titles as a wrestler. The drive to take his life down this path, he says, comes from wrestling.

Programs of Study

  • Biochemistry majors at Eastern develop a broad range of basic scientific knowledge, outstanding laboratory skills, superior quantitative analysis skills, and the ability to express scientific information in verbal and written forms.  Faculty from the Physical Sciences and Biology departments teach this interdisciplinary major, including core requirements and electives. A variety of internship and undergraduate research opportunities provide hands-on learning opportunities and inform classroom learning. A minor in Biochemistry is also available to students in other majors.
