We’re excited to welcome you to the art gallery! Whether this is your students’ first visit to an art museum or they are seasoned gallery-goers, we want the gallery to be a comfortable, welcoming place to look, think, talk, and engage with art.

Museums and galleries have a few conventions that may not be obvious if you haven’t spent much time in them. Before your visit, please share the following guidelines with your students. They help us protect the artwork, create a good experience for everyone, and make sure your group can get the most out of its visit. We look forward to welcoming you and your students. 

A Few Things to Know 

Please don't touch the artwork. 
Even when something looks sturdy or is displayed within reach, please keep your hands to yourself. Oil, dirt, and moisture from our hands can damage artwork and surfaces over time. When looking closely, use your eyes rather than your hands. 

No food or drinks in the gallery. 
Please finish snacks, meals, and beverages before entering the gallery. Water bottles and other drinks should remain outside the exhibition space. 

Please leave backpacks and large bags outside the gallery. 
Backpacks, large bags, and bulky items can accidentally bump into artwork or other visitors. Please leave them outside along the wall. Small handbags are permitted. 

Pencils are welcome; ink is not. 
If you are taking notes or making sketches, please use a pencil. Pens, markers, and other ink-based materials are not permitted in the galleries. 

Please keep a respectful distance from the artwork. 
Look for the boundaries, walls, platforms, or other indicators showing how close you may stand. When in doubt, give the artwork a little extra space. 

Photography may be welcome—but please check first. 
Photography policies vary from exhibition to exhibition. Follow posted signs and gallery staff instructions. Never use flash unless specifically permitted. 

Phones should be silent. 
Phones can be useful tools for looking up information, taking notes, or photographing works when permitted. Please silence notifications and avoid phone conversations in the gallery. 

Be curious and ask questions. 
You don't need to be an art expert to visit a gallery! There are no special credentials required for looking at art. Students are encouraged to ask questions, share observations, and have different interpretations. Not knowing what you're looking at is often a great place to start.
