VIDEO: Intercultural Center hosts culture fest block party

Eastern’s Student Center parking lot transformed into an impromptu dance floor on Sept.18 for the second annual “Back to the Block: Culture Fest.” This year’s theme was the World Cup and encouraged students to show off their country’s flag with pride. 

“For many of our students, being at college means being away from home, whether it’s their first time or not,” said Josiah Cook, coordinator of the Intercultural Center. “Events like Back to the Block allow us to create a sense of home away from home — spaces where students can see themselves represented, celebrate who they are, and also learn about and celebrate one another.” 

The evening started at 6 p.m. with Little Italy Pizza Truck serving up fresh pies, an inflatable soccer dart board, and the energetic sounds of DJ Fire.

As the sun set along the parking lot, energy only got higher. A wide array of music highlighting numerous cultures around the world could be heard thumping, causing eventgoers to congregate in front of the DJ booth and excitedly dance together. 

“Seeing all the different cultures and ethnicities represented on our campus and seeing how much pride students have for where they come from was really special,” added Cook. “Our cultures are such an important part of who we are, and they help fuel us to show up as our most authentic selves.”
