Eastern’s Police Department was recently recognized by Special Olympics Connecticut (SOCT) for raising over $2,500 in support of the Special Olympics. The 2025 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Level of Excellence Award was earned largely due to the efforts of Officer Nicole Theriault, who served as coordinator for Leg 3 of the statewide event benefiting SOCT.

“These funds help provide year-round sports training, competitions, and health services for our athletes,” said Theriault. “The statewide event raised nearly $1 million, ensuring that participation remains accessible, giving athletes the opportunity to build confidence, develop skills, and be part of an inclusive community.”

The 2026 Annual Torch Run will take place on June 6, when once again Theriault will serve as a Leg 3 coordinator. According to Theriault, her role as organizer for Eastern’s leg of the race  means overseeing many aspects of the event, from coordinating logistics, recruiting volunteers, working with local businesses, and making sure athletes and participants have a safe and meaningful experience.

“Balancing that with my duties as a police officer here at Eastern requires strong time management and teamwork,” she said. “I rely on the support of my department and fellow officers, often handling planning during off hours and staying organized well in advance to keep everything running smoothly.”

Theriault remarked that her favorite part of the event is watching the athletes and the community at large come together for a common goal.

“The torch run is more than just a fundraiser — it’s a symbol of unity, support, and inclusion,” she said. “Running alongside athletes, fellow officers, and community members while carrying the 'Flame of Hope' torch is an experience that really puts into perspective why we do this.”

She continued: “The energy, pride, and joy from everyone involved make it unforgettable every year.”
