The Willimantic Stop & Shop grocery store presented Eastern with a generous donation in support of its efforts to combat food insecurity on campus. Presented during the store’s grand re-opening on May 30, the donation will support the University's food pantry, Shawn's Cupboard.

“At Stop & Shop, we’re proud to support our local communities,” said store manager Sara Tegge. “Today we’re supporting Eastern and its food pantry, Shawn’s Cupboard, by presenting them with this donation.”

Stephanie Cunha, Stop & Shop’s regional communications leader, explained the local store’s partnership with Eastern and Shawn’s Cupboard.

“Today, we’re cementing our relationship with Eastern by increasing our (annual) donations from $7,500 to $10,000 due to (students') increased need,” said Cunha. “Our stores are very involved with our host communities, giving back, creating relationships, and making an impact where we can.”

Eastern President Karim Ismaili spoke at the grand re-opening, acknowledging Stop & Shop for its generosity.

“On behalf of the University, I am incredibly grateful for the support you’re providing our students with this donation,” he said. “Food insecurity is a real issue for our students and every dollar will be spent wisely to support nutritious food and personal care items.”

Dean of Students Kemesha Wilmot ‘05 underscored the need for community partnerships that have the basic needs of students in mind.

“When a student comes into my office, hunger is not one of the things I want to hear is stopping them from pursuing their education,” she said. “We produce incredible students, and your donation is not only helping them with food insecurity; it’s helping them shape their futures.”
