An alumnus of Eastern’s business information systems program (BIS) recently advanced from his summer 2024 internship with insurance company The Hartford to a career position with the company. Joe Hines ‘25 now serves as a process analyst for the company’s leadership development program.

“Now that I’ve graduated, I'm looking to expand my professional connections as well as develop further key skills with Eastern's master’s program in applied data science,” said Hines. “I'm looking forward to where the road takes me and I'm thankful for everyone who's helped me along the way.”

Hines credited the support of Eastern’s faculty, namely business information systems Professor and Associate Chair Alex Citurs for assisting in developing his resume and refining his skillset for the professional world.

“Landing an internship can be a tough task, but it’s always important to use your resources, be they from Eastern or external,” said Hines. “Dr. Citurs sat down with me to help develop my resume as well as key skills I would need (and still use) on and off the job.

Hines lauded his connections with Eastern's College of Education and Professional Studies, including Administrative Assistant Paula Goyette, Dean Niti Pandey, and Assistant Dean Ryan Colwell: “I found that my connections with the dean’s office helped me further develop and hone my skills in the professional space.”

According to Hines, he picked up key industry knowledge not only from Eastern’s faculty and staff but also from his peers. “A lot of people currently in school have a small (but significant) background in business and industry,” said Hines. “It’s important to maintain those connections and make sure to honor them.”

Hines advised that future business majors should take advantage of the connections they make and maintain the lessons they learn from them beyond surface level once they gain their internships. “Learn, listen, and pay it forward,” he said.
