Rihanna and Calvin Harris’s “This is What You Came For” played overhead as flashing lights and dancing students filled Eastern’s Webb Lawn after sunset on Aug. 25. The inaugural “Light the Way” celebration welcomed new students as they started their first semester as Warriors.

The event featured opening remarks, a candle lighting ceremony, and musical performances, followed by s’mores, dancing, and a live DJ. Organized by the Office of Student Activities, the inaugural event marked a new tradition at Eastern, commemorating a fresh start for new Eastern students.

“[Light the Way] is about building community and connection,” said Eastern President Karim Ismaili. He reflected on his own college experience, where he had to learn to balance school, work, and family life, all while exploring a new environment in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Ismaili hopes that this new tradition will help incoming students find direction and a sense of belonging through a stronger campus community. “I didn’t always know who to turn to or how to find the answers to the questions that would help me succeed,” he said.

During the event, students were introduced to many of their peers for the first time. Ismaili told the new Warriors that “here, you’re surrounded by a community that believes in you.”

Mia Sommers, president of Eastern’s Student Government Association (SGA), encouraged students to get involved with campus events and activities.

“This is your chance to try new things, get involved, and make lifelong friends,” she said, highlighting Eastern’s more than 90 student clubs and organizations. “There are countless ways to find your place.”

Eastern’s first-generation student community was also recognized, with Ismaili stating that 50% of incoming students are the first in their families to attend college. “You are pioneers, all of you, and you’re about to explore new frontiers,” he said.

Following the remarks by Ismaili and Sommers, students came together to participate in a ceremony. Senior Sarah Duffy sang an uplifting rendition of “Rise Up” by Andrea Day while the crowd of incoming students lit candles, symbolizing lighting a path to success on their college journey.

“‘Light the Way’ was created as a way to bring the Eastern community together,” said Alyssa Duffy, director of New Student and Family Programs. “Seeing the lawn come to life as students lit their lights … symbolized that they are not on their journey alone.”

After the ceremony, Webb Lawn transformed into a vibrant party. A DJ played dance music, students waved LED light sticks, and fires were lit for roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. Duffy also noted that the lawn was lined with paper lanterns, decorated by students with either creative designs or college goals and dreams.

When asked about their first impressions of Eastern, a group of incoming students praised a caring community and lively atmosphere and expressed appreciation for their student orientation counselors (SOCs), who assisted their transition into college.
