Eastern Connecticut State University’s WECS Radio Club has been home to a myriad of dynamic radio shows and their equally engaging hosts since 2009. The club’s focus is to provide a community for people to grow in anything related to radio, podcasting, music, and audio technology.

Club President Jacob Wurst's role primarily entails running and coordinating meetings. He explained that one of the prerequisites for the position is a working knowledge of how radio works, both on a technical and performative scale.

“Once any of our live shows gets going and runs smoothly, that rush of euphoria I feel helps remind me that it is my favorite activity to do with the club,” said Wurst. “I am especially glad to see so many eager volunteers these past two semesters who are looking to present what they want to present over the airwaves, and how we were able to foster our own little community by doing this.”

Vice President Kyle Berson explained that a primary goal of the club is to help members build their communication skills and inspire confidence. This concept is integrated into meeting activities and events.

“A typical meeting will usually have some sort of little activity plan related to music, radio, or podcasting,” said Berson. “One of our favorite activities is ‘PowerPoint Day,’ when we make a PowerPoint about anything and present it. It’s a good way to get laughs out of members and build public speaking skills.”

Public Relations Officer Jason Salois runs the club Instagram page, creates promotional posters, and leads branding and revenue activities. “I love content creation, so getting to do it for a platform I normally do not create content for is a great learning experience,” he said.

“One of my favorite activities to do in the club is our bi-weekly radio show called ‘On Air with Radio Club,’ as it helps the club members get hands-on experience with the equipment in the studio and showcase their personalities.”

Club Treasurer Brendan Borkowski utilizes his skills as a business major to plan the club budget and events. “It's fun crunching the numbers to see how much we may want to spend on the many events we want to host,” he said. “As a business major, looking for ways to innovate what we have and looking to the future is something I love to see.”

He continued: “My favorite part of the club is seeing the growth and chemistry of the club and its members.”
Borkowski enjoys working on “Small Talk,” a recently launched segment on the club's radio show: “‘Small Talk’ was designed for students to discuss residential life and current pop culture events. I couldn't be happier to see the members wanting to take that segment every week.”

Yosselin Guerrero Badillo’s role as secretary involves taking notes and helping to organize event logistics. Her favorite part of the club is conducting on-air interviews with other campus organizations.

“It's always fascinating to hear the stories of clubs and community leaders and share them with our listeners,” said Badillo.
