 Aicha Ly

Aicha Ly Wins Gilman Scholarship

Political science major Aicha Ly has been selected to win a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study in Costa Rica. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Sate’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the scholarship provides support to undergraduate students for studying or interning abroad. Ly, who plans to pursue a career in international law, with a focus on human rights and immigration issues, will use her scholarship to study migration, human rights and the Spanish language in Costa Rica over Wintersession. She will also live with a host family to maximize her cultural experience. Ly is one of six Eastern students to win a Gilman scholarship over the past decade.

Fulbright Deadline is September 7 for Eastern Seniors and Alumni

Eastern seniors and alumni who are interested in applying for a Fulbright grant for 2022 must submit all materials by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. Fulbright provides funding for college graduates to spend 8 to 12 months studying, doing independent research or creative work, or teaching English in another country. Students and alumni interested in applying should contact Julia DeLapp, Coordinator of the Fellowships Office, as soon as possible. All materials, including the online application, essays, letters of recommendation, language evaluations, and transcripts are due by September 7th.

 Adam Murphy

Adam Murphy Receives Scholarship to Study in Indonesia

Adam Murphy, '18, has been awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship for language study in Indonesia this summer. The scholarship will enable Adam to continue the language study he began last summer though a ten-week USINDO Summer Studies scholarship in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Adam is a political science and history major with an Asian studies minor. The scholarship will fund Murphy’s travel expenses and his educational costs.

 Jacob Dayton

Jacob Dayton is Eastern's First Goldwater Scholar

Jacob Dayton, an Honors student majoring in Biology, has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for undergraduates in STEM fields who intend to pursue a Ph.D. and a research career. As stated on its website, the mission of the Goldwater Scholarship Program is to “identify and support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this Nation’s next generation of research leaders in these fields.” They are seeking students with the “potential for a significant future contribution to research in his/her chosen field.” Jacob intends to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology, with eventual plans to conduct research in molecular and evolutionary genomics and teach at the university level.

 Quanece Williams

Quanece Williams Receives Grant to Teach in the Czech Republic

Political science and history major Quanece Williams, '16, was awarded a prestigious U.S. Fulbright Student Program grant to serve as an English teaching assistant (ETA) in the Czech Republic for the 2017-2018 academic year. Williams will be placed in an English language class as an assistant teacher in a secondary school in the Czech Republic. During her time there, she plans to partner with the European Environmental Agency to inform local residents about the environment and conduct cleanup projects. Williams also plans to utilize her dance training by hosting weekly modern and hip-hop classes.

 Sierra Colon

Sierra Colon Receives Scholarship to South Africa

Political science major Sierra Colon, '17, has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to complete a summer internship in South Africa. Colon will intern with the Surplus People Project (SPP), a nonprofit organization in Cape Town, South Africa. She will work with SPP's new Youth Movement, made up of local college students fighting to decrease the price of food. She will intern alongside two other international students.

 Brandan Sumeersarnauth

Brandan Sumeersarnauth Awarded Two Scholarships to Japan

Environmental earth science major Brandan Sumeersarnauth has been awarded two scholarships to support studying abroad in Japan. He is one of only 25 undergraduate students nationwide to receive the Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan, as well as one of 800 American undergraduates to receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Sumeersarnauth will enroll in humanities, foreign policy, and language courses at Musashi University in Tokyo. He hopes to return to the country later to further his studies in coastal geology.

 Eric Cerino

Eric Cerino Awarded NSF Fellowship

Psychology major Eric Cerino received a $30,000 Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) fellowship from the National Science Foundation. The fellowship stipend will cover Cerino's tuition and support direct research costs during the first 12 months of his Ph.D. program at Oregon State University's (OSU) LIFE* in an Aging Society program (*Linking Individuals, Families, and Environments). While at OSU, Cerino will extend his Psychosocial and Gerontechnology research and collaborate with engineering professors and students.

 Ricky Magner

Ricky Magner Earns Goldwater Honorable Mention

Mathematics major Ricky Magner, 15, received an Honorable Mention in the 2014 Goldwater competition, which focuses on students committed to pursuing a research career in a STEM field. Magner is the first Eastern student to be recognized by Goldwater. Magner has conducted research in number theory under the mentorship of Dr. Mizan Khan, with whom he has co-authored two publications. He presented his research at two research conferences in 2013. He has completed multiple graduate-level courses in mathematics and served as a teaching assistant for an upper-division course on Number Theory. In addition, he has independently written computer programs to aid his research. Magner was the first recipient of Eastern’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship.
