The event invited the campus community to explore how faculty advance knowledge, enrich teaching, and make a meaningful difference both locally and globally.

The symposium featured three themed sessions that reflected the best of who we are and what we do. The first two hours included a series of lightning talks—each four minutes or less—offering compelling glimpses into faculty work across disciplines. The final hour culminated in a panel discussion about the enduring value of the liberal arts in today’s workforce.

Session 1: The Teacher–Scholar
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

This session explored the dynamic intersection of teaching and research. Presentations demonstrated how:

  • Scholarly work enriches classroom instruction, making it research-informed, relevant, and current.
  • Faculty contributions elevate their disciplines and bolster Eastern’s academic reputation.
  • Students are actively involved in research and creative endeavors, gaining hands-on experience in the pursuit of knowledge.

The session reflected Eastern’s public liberal arts mission and was designed to engage a general audience.

Session 2: Global Thinking, Local Impact
2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

This session highlighted how globally aware faculty apply their scholarship to regional challenges. Topics included:

  • Community-based learning and service projects
  • Educational outreach and public engagement
  • Partnerships with nonprofits, agencies, and industry
  • Social work, global studies, and fieldwork experiences

These presentations demonstrated how Eastern’s faculty make a difference in eastern Connecticut and beyond.

Session 3: Liberal Arts and the Workforce
3:00 – 4:00 p.m. | Panel Discussion

The final session brought faculty together to discuss how a liberal arts education prepares students for career success. Topics included:

  • The alignment of liberal arts learning outcomes with workforce needs
  • Career-readiness through internships, co-curricular experiences, and interdisciplinary programs
