Most faculty accept some late work under certain conditions--even if their syllabus implies or explicitly states that no late work will be accepted. Unfortunately, unstated/unwritten policies can create an equity issue. Some students know to reach out to their professor if they have extenuating circumstances (e.g., a death in the family) and ask for an extension. But not all students know to ask. First generation college students, for example, may be less likely to realize that exceptions might be possible. For faculty who will accept late work, it is more equitable to explicitly state how students can make such a request on the syllabus and/or the conditions under which an extension will be considered.
If you are going to be late for a deadline, contacting me in advance of the deadline to let me know that you will be missing the deadline is required for me to accept late work. If an extension is granted, there must be an agreed upon deadline for late work. When you request an extension, you should provide an explanation of why you are requesting the extension and propose a new deadline.
Late Submissions: Discussion worksheets for the ____ book will not be accepted late, as they are meant to inform your group’s discussion on the day they are due. You must have completed them prior to arriving in class to receive credit. If you are going to miss class due to illness, etc., you will only receive credit for your worksheet if you email it to me by 7 am on the day of class so I can print it for your group to use in their discussion. Book summaries will also not be accepted late for credit, as these are designed to keep you on track with your reading. Other assignments will be accepted late if you contact me before the deadline to request an extension. Please reach out to me if you have extenuating circumstances - I can work with you, but only if I hear from you.
