Advising students who are on academic probation

  • Students are placed on probation if their overall GPA falls below a 2.0. As part of probation, they are required to participate in the Academic Support and Assistance Program (ASAP). This involves one-on-one meetings and attending Probation Workshops offered by the Advising Center, which covers such issues as academic policies, support services available on campus and time management skills. They are also instructed to meet with their Academic Advisor throughout the semester regarding curriculum in their major, career options, experiential opportunities, and to obtain registration code during their registration period.
  • Each student's Overall Grade Point Average is now listed on the "Advisee Listing" page in E-Web Online. We hope that faculty and staff will find this convenient and that this information helps to easily identify students who are having academic difficulties.

  • Encourage students to repeat courses in which "D" or "F" grades were earned, unless the student feels a better grade is not possible.
  • Help identify factors which might sabotage student's efforts to succeed academically (e.g., If a student needs to work more than 15 hours per week, suggest s/he attend as a part-time student.)
  • Encourage students to seek help early in the semester.
  • Emphasize time management, study skills, regular class attendance.
  • Any student who is struggling in a course should be encouraged to take advantage of support services offered at the Academic Success Center (Tutoring Center, Writing Center, Mathematics Achivement Center).
  • Refer students to various support services on campus.
