Expectations for Success Scholars

Continued Scholar Eligibility

Upon acceptance into the Success Scholars Program, Success Scholars are required to attend a pre-fall orientation event during the Warrior Welcome. This event is usually the day before the university’s fall orientation begins.

Scholar eligibility will be reviewed each semester until graduation. Eligibility is maintained by:

  1. Continued full-time enrollment in biology or mathematical sciences major
  2. Staying on track for degree completion
  3. Financial need
  4. A minimum cumulative 2.7 GPA
  5. Participation in required Eastern Success activities.

Failure to meet any eligibility criterion may result in the scholar being dismissed from the program. However, scholars with a lower than 2.7 GPA will be placed under academic notice for the following semester and work closely with the faculty and peer mentors to improve their academic performance. A return to the program in good standing will occur when the scholar achieves the minimum GPA or higher during their probationary semester. Only one semester of academic notice per scholar is permitted, during the 4-year scholarship. Any additional semester where the scholar does not maintain the eligibility requirements, will result in dismissal from the program, without any probationary semester. Statements of academic notice will be sent at the end of each fall and spring semester.

Please note that an official leave of absence will not cause you to lose your place in the Success Scholars Program. The semester(s) in which you are absent will put your scholarship on hold, and you will pick up again where you left off once you return to Eastern.  Please communicate with the Success director if you are planning to take a leave of absence to discuss any changes to the above requirements that may be necessary in your case, so that we can ensure your success.

Required Coursework

Every fall semester the first-year Success Scholars will take the same First Year Introduction (FYI) class.  The FYI colloquium is a course that all students at the university participate in during their first year. The activities for the Success Scholars in their FYI course change each year.

Study Abroad

There are no study abroad requirements for Success Scholars. If you are planning to study abroad for an entire year, please get in touch with the Success director to discuss how best to meet your third year Success Scholar requirements.
