Eastern’s Student Center welcomed more than 200 students on Jan. 29 as the Office of Student Activities and the Arthur L. Johnson Unity Wing hosted their semesterly club fair and open house. The events featured 45 student organizations as well as the Unity Wing's three centers, displaying Eastern’s diverse offerings of extracurricular/academic clubs, community service organizations, and cultural havens.

According to Jenfrey Florentino, assistant director of student activities, the event was “very impactful for our new first-year and transfer students.” The events have proven to be an effective way to help students explore clubs and organizations, fostering community and engagement on campus.

Among the participating organizations were several newly established clubs. Formed last fall were the Pickleball Club, Software Engineering Club, and the Pet and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), among others.

“It's amazing to see all of the new initiatives and creativity from our students,” said Florentino. “Forming a new club is fairly easy and I enjoy hearing new ideas that will promote engagement on campus.”

Along with extracurricular activities, Eastern also offers various academic and educational clubs. The Pre-Law Society helps students prepare for the Connecticut LSAT exam, while the Muslim Students Association (MSA) focuses on broadening students’ knowledge of Islam.

With more than 90 student clubs and organizations on campus, many are planning large events this spring. The Film and Media Club’s 48-hour film festival and Creative Writing Club’s “coffee table” reading sessions are two events students can expect.

Student organizations are already fostering engagement with various events on campus. Eastern’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Black Student Union (BSU) worked with the University Residential Outreach Council (UROC) and the Unity Wing’s Intercultural Center (IC) to host “Icons and Innovations: A Black History Trivia Night” on Feb. 2.

Eastern’s Unity Wing (UW) also organized a competitive “Goose Chase,” designed to introduce students to its programs and resources. Participating students explored and learned about the UW’s various centers and resources for a chance to win a gift basket. “The Pride Center, Intercultural Center and Women’s Center are all hot spots that you can utilize if you don’t feel comfortable on campus,” said Carter of the Women’s Center. “We always have the door open and try to be there for others.”
