Commencement Eastern graduates 958 at 2022 Commencement Exercises

Eastern returned to the XL Center in Hartford, CT, on May 17, for the first time in three years to hold graduation exercises. Looking out at the graduates and upwards of 10,000 guests, commencement speaker Lena Rodriguez, president and CEO of the Community Renewal Team in Hartford, said, “The pride and joy emanating in this XL Center is exhilarating. From here I see a sea of happiness and anticipation!”

Abigail Donaghy was 13 years old when her father brought her to an open audition in New York City that forever changed her life. Today, at 21, she is a full-time Eastern student who is managing a budding career as an actress. The History major from Willington has appeared in movies and television series on Netflix, HBO Max, Showtime and Amazon Prime Video.

Cheerleading Cheerleading team places in top 10 at College Nationals

Eastern's club cheerleading team finished in the top 10 at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals this April 6–10 in Daytona Beach, FL. With more than 400 teams competing, the College Nationals is the largest collegiate cheerleading competition in the country.

Emiliano Villanueva Emiliano Villanueva explains the rise of wine

Wine runs deep for Emiliano Villanueva. The son of two generations of Italian winemakers, Villanueva grew up in Mendoza, Argentina — the wine capital of South America — where he spent summers harvesting grapes and tending the family vineyards. He managed wineries in Spain and Argentina and even lived in France where he obtained a master’s degree in the world’s first wine-related MBA program from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV).

Eastern students Nelson Javier Santos Ferrer ’22 of Westfield, MA, and Natalie Devlin ’22 of Somers, CT, have been named recipients of the 2022 Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award. The Barnard Award is the premier academic recognition of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System (CSCU) and is sponsored by the CSCU Foundation.

Into the Shade CT Humanities funds Eastern documentary on tobacco farms and civil rights

Eastern has been awarded $35,000 by Connecticut Humanities to produce a documentary about Connecticut’s shade tobacco industry and its connection to the civil rights movement. “Stepping into the Shade: Tobacco’s Connection to Civil Rights” will be a six-part mini-series hosted by Connecticut entertainment producer June Archer.

Psych researchers Psychology researchers present on daughter-parent mate preference

Eastern psychology student Noelle Ciccarelli presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) convention on Feb. 18. Ciccarelli’s project was titled “Similarities and Differences in Mate Preferences among Parents and their Daughters,” and focused on the ratings that daughters gave when seeking a male mate, compared to their parents’ ratings when seeking a mate for their daughters.
