Examining Depictions of Masculinity

On April 13, Duane de Four, an educator, media critic and activist working to prevent sexual assault, spoke to a diverse audience at Eastern Connecticut State University about the true cost of the media’s obsession with traditional masculinity.

Using a multimedia presentation, de Four used examples from advertising, television, video games and social media to critique depictions of men and masculinity that not only harm men, but also encourage a rape culture. He urged the audience to challenge these messages as they encounter them in their daily lives. The presentation was audience interactive, and students were invited to pose questions and ideas, and respond to the content throughout.   The presentation by de Four was made possible by the student group Men Achieving Leadership, Excellence and Success, and their collaboration with the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Team at Eastern. De Four has conducted numerous trainings and given presentations to universities, schools, branches of the military and professional athletes. He also blogs about these issues on howmanly.com.
