How did you end up at Eastern?

“I retired early from Stonehill College but decided I was too young and had a few more years left to teach. I knew folks at Eastern from having done the sociology program review about 10 or 12 years ago. I heard they needed someone so I threw my hat in the ring.”

Teaching Focus

“I am teaching two sections of introductory sociology and two sections of sociology of mental illness.”

Research Interests

“I’ve written and edited six books; the most recent is “Condemn and Resist: Sociologists Respond to the First Year of Trump 2.0,” published by Emerald Press. I am working on a final book for Emerald titled “Revolutionary Sociology.” I also do singing lectures (I am an acoustic guitar player and vocalist) on folksongs and social movements, which I’ve performed all over the world.”

What are your first impressions of Eastern?

“I’ve enjoyed the diversity and honesty of students and the pleasant environment of the campus. I see a lot of hard-working faculty who care about their craft, their research, their teaching and their students. Staff has been incredibly patient and helpful for new faculty. I do worry about students who are balancing work, studies, activities, family, etc. We need to rethink some of what higher education is to best mesh with the lives of our students and the precarity of our current economy and the future of work.”

What is your teaching philosophy?

“I try to keep the pressure level low and engage students as much as possible. I require a lot of reading and writing, but I believe students learn even more on their own processing and reflecting on class discussions and readings than they do in class listening to lectures. I also try to incorporate community engagement in my intro classes. ”

Sociological skills and concepts can be useful in any field as it provides particularly analytical ways to understand the world.

Career advice to students?

“Consider Sociology a set of tools that can be employed in all career trajectories. If you want to teach, it’s very rewarding (although challenging these days). But sociological skills and concepts can be useful in any field as it provides particularly analytical ways to understand the world.”

Advice to alumni?

“Don't limit yourself to preconceived notions of “real life” after graduation. Take time to follow passions and move in directions that bring you closer to career paths but recognize you need to love what you do.”
