Biography

In addition to her role as a dedicated educator, J.J. Cobb enjoys her work as a professional director, playwright, voice and period movement styles coach, and actor. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Acting Performance from the University of Arizona and received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre (with minors in English and Ethnic Studies), from California State University, Fresno. Prior to her tenure at Eastern, she established the Theatre program at the University of Rio Grande and taught in their Master of Education program. She has guest-lectured and taught Master Classes at universities, conferences, and professional theatres.

As The Financially-Savvy Starving Artist, Professor Cobb serves as a resource for artists to understand how to monetize their craft consistently and securely. She instructs workshops and intensives on budgeting for gig income, defined contribution vs. defined benefit plans, union membership, tax ramifications of artistic contracts, managers vs. agents, paying down (and avoiding) debt, and expense distribution plans for two-artist households.

Professor Cobb’s specialization in the area of Site-Specific Theatre has led to the creation/production of The Couriers (Site-Specific), Sweet Flag (Site-Reflective; Connecticut); Cantilever (Site-Reflective; Connecticut), Il Ristorante (Site-Responsive; Ohio), Echoes: Voices From The Church Farm (Site-Specific; Connecticut), The Tower Caveat (Site-Specific; California), and The Melting Point (Site-Specific; Hawaii). In recognition of her work on Cantilever, she was selected as a Freeman Scholar by the Japan Studies Association Institute and chosen a Site-Specific Theatre Advisor to the Institute of Outdoor Theatre/Southeastern Theatre Conference. J.J. Cobb is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

For Eastern, J.J. Cobb has directed numerous shows, including Blithe Spirit; Little Women; Dancing at Lughnasa; Thieves’ Carnival; The Distance From Here; and Hasty Bauble.
