Arturo and Elba Candales Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Arturo and Elba Candales Memorial Endowed Scholarship, was established by Dr. Barbara A. Candales ’74 and her brothers Robert A. and Randall R. A. Candales, honors their parents Arturo and Elba Candales, who were leaders in the Puerto Rican community in New London in the 1960s. The fund supports the social work profession. Barbara Candales was named Connecticut’s “Social Worker of the Year” for 2006 and had a distinguished teaching and academic career in which she was at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work for nearly a decade and was a recipient of Central Connecticut’s “Teaching Excellence Award.” The scholarship is awarded to a Latino/a with unmet financial need who has at least a 2.0 GPA and is a United States citizen. Preference is given to social work majors but sociology majors and anthropology minors are also eligible.

Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA by March 1
