MS in Applied Data Science (Online)

STARTING SPRING 2024

Data Analysis

Within the past few years, organizations have embraced Data Science as a way of fulfilling their missions and improving their services through data-driven decision-making. Data Science is now one of the fastest growing career areas in Connecticut and in the country, and contributes to fields as diverse as business, finance, healthcare, insurance, environmental science, medicine, political science, and more. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, data science jobs are expected to grow 36%, “much faster than average”, between 2021 and 2031.

Since 2020, “Data Scientist” has ranked in the top 3 of Glassdoor’s 50 Best Jobs in America.

Students in the Applied Data Science Master's Program develop critical thinking skills not just to gain expertise in solving data-centric problems but to also include real-world examples and case studies, with an emphasis on applied, hands-on learning. Chris Holdgraf, director of the nonprofit International Interactive Computing Collaboration shares: “Being a data scientist gives me the flexibility to work with people with many different kinds of backgrounds and to work on problems that are meaningful to lots of different communities, which I really enjoy."

Our unique program is comprised of 30 required credit hours taught by faculty members in the departments of Computer Science, Mathematical Sciences, and Education with expertise in areas related to Data Science. Through a diverse but cohesive set of courses, students learn topics in the areas of coding, statistics, machine learning, databases, big data, data communication, and data visualization. The program culminates with a capstone project where students work with an outside sponsor or faculty member to complete an extensive data science project.
