Scheduling Policy

Rationale: The following schedule of standard meeting times and the policies related to scheduling of classes are designed to make optimal use of Eastern's classrooms, labs and studios, minimize class scheduling conflicts, and promote a campus culture that is consistent with Eastern's mission as a primarily residential undergraduate liberal arts college.

Standard Meeting Times for Undergraduate Lecture/Seminar Classes on the Eastern Campus

3 Credit Classes

MWF 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM
MWF 9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
MWF 10:00 AM - 10:50 AM
MWF 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM
MWF 12:00 PM - 12:50 PM
MWF 1:00 PM - 1:50 PM
MWF 2:00 PM - 2:50 PM
MF 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM
TR 8:00 AM - 9:15 AM
TR 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM
TR 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM
TR 12:30 PM - 1:45 PM
TR 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM

Blocks: Each block includes three classes (two twice-a-week classes and one 3-hour day class) submitted by one department chair for classes appropriate for the same students:
Block Scheduling will be discontinued while Goddard Hall is shut down for renovations.

· An Appeals Committee will evaluate requests for non-standard meeting times.
· No changes are being made to scheduling of studios or labs except that they should begin at standard meeting times. Department chairs will schedule studios and labs across all class meeting times and days.
· Each department should schedule no more than 60% of courses during "peak hours," no more than 40% of classes in "evening hours", and at least 10% of classes with start times before 9:30 AM ("early hours").
· The following language from the CSU-AAUP contract is included here for reference:

10.7.1 No member with a class, university or department assignment after 6:00 p.m. on one day shall be given any assignment prior to 9:00 a.m. on the next day without the member's consent.

Early hours: Classes that begin at 8:00 or 9:00 AM. (At least 10% of each program's classes)

Peak hours: Classes that begin between 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM and end at 3:15 PM or earlier. (No more than 60% of each program's classes)

Evening hours: Classes that begin at 4:00 PM or later (No more than 40% of each program's classes)
