The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education promotes mind-body unity for all students. The department provides students with educational and professional experiences to enhance knowledge and participation in health, wellness and recreational activities. In addition to professional preparation programs, the department offers classes in Health, Wellness and Recreational Sport skills activities as part of its liberal arts offerings.

Programs of Study

  • The Physical Education major is designed for students who have a love of physical education and a special interest in working in sport and exercise activities. The program provides excellent preparation for careers in school physical education programs and other related agencies such as YMCAs, YWCAs, boys and girls clubs, and city or town public and private recreation programs and clubs. The major emphasizes studies in exercise science, instructional philosophy, and pedagogical analysis and techniques. The hallmark of this distinctive program is extensive clinical field experiences in public schools and professional agencies. A Physical Education minor is available to non-PE majors.

  • The Sport and Leisure Management major provides students with exciting professional opportunities that enhance knowledge, along with options for participating in health, wellness and recreational activities. Concentrations include Sport Management and Sport Science and Performance. A Sport and Leisure Management minor is also available.

  • The Physical Education Studies Concentration is designed for students who have a love of physical education and a special interest in working in sport and exercise activities but who are not planning to become physical education teachers. In lieu of student teaching and clinical experiences, students in this Concetration take a minor and an internship.

  • The Coaching minor is attractive to those interested in working with young people in interscholastic sports programs and community volunteer sports programs. Courses introduce students to the philosophical, scientific and developmental aspects of conducting sports programs.

  • The Health minor is useful to teacher education students as well as students who major in Psychology, Sociology and Social Work. This minor provides a foundation for students who need a knowledge of health concepts and principles for their careers.
