Undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates who have completed all requirements for Connecticut teacher certification may request a certification recommendation from Eastern (as described in Step 1). Upon confirming that the candidate has met all requirements, Eastern provides the candidate with a formal recommendation for certification. The candidate then submits the recommendation and supporting documents to the Connecticut State Department of Education (as described in Step 2)

Current candidates should access their paid Tk20 accounts and refer to the instructions in their certification recommendation portfolios rather than using Step 1 in the accordion menu outlined below. Any candidates who don’t have a Tk20 account may follow instructions in the accordion below and submit hard copies of the documents to the Office of the Dean, School of Education and Professional Studies, Webb Hall 160.

Step 1 – Submit certification application and materials in Tk20

Step 2 – CT State Department of Education’s Process

***NOTE: The current state application process has been temporarily amended due to COVID-19. You will receive direct advising on the application process during your Student Teaching semester.*** Upon completion of the certification recommendation process, the completed ED 170A Short Form Application for Connecticut Initial Educator Certificate will be returned to the applicant. At this point, the applicant should forward the following documents to the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) in Hartford:

  • Completed ED 170A, with Eastern seal and signature
  • $200 processing fee (Money order, cashier’s check, or certified bank check made out to “Treasurer, State of Connecticut”)
  • $100 processing fee for each additional endorsement
  • Official Eastern transcript with degree posted
  • Official transcript(s) from any other institution(s) that you attended
  • Praxis II for Elementary & Secondary candidates or Early Childhood Test score report for ECE.
    • CSDE only accepts Praxis II scores that were reported directly from the testing agency (ETS or Pearson). If you did not request that the scores be forwarded to CSDE at the time you took the tests, you must request that your scores are forwarded prior to mailing your certification application.  If you need to re-take Praxis II exams, you may qualify for a waiver of the registration fee.   • CT Foundations of Reading Test Score Report, submitted digitally by the testing organization (Elementary & ECE applicants only)
  • First Aid card (Physical Education applicants only)
