Road map for settling on a major by sophomore year
  • There is more than one “right major” for any career, so:
  • First – explore courses in at least 2 areas that are connected to your current academic “likes” and strengths
  • TALK TO your professional advisor, faculty advisor, staff at Center for Internships and Career Development, your Dean
  • Use Liberal Arts Curriculum coursework (46 credits) to help you focus your career exploration
  • Do independent study projects and connect to student organizations with interests similar to yours
Choosing the “right” major for your career goals

How can you be sure you are in the “right” major?

  • At least 3 majors for any career choice
  • Majors for any one career do differ in their approach to the subject matter
  • Pick one subject associated with a major that is related to your career interest and start with that major – if the coursework focuses on topics you want to keep reading about, you are on track for choosing the right major for you!
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS and DON’T BE AFRAID TO SWITCH MAJORS!
“Traditional” or “Individualized” Major pathway – which to choose?
  • Both are targeted to specific career aspirations
  • Both meet the requirements for entrance into graduate or professional academic programs
  • Both require targeted advising so you can complete your academic plan in 4 years to graduation
  • Both need you to do independent study projects/internships to develop career skills that make you competitive in today’s job/graduate school market
