At ECSU
I am an associate professor of science education in the
Education Department. Before moving to Connecticut,
I was a post-doctoral researcher/teacher in the College
of Engineering (Aerospace
Engineering Department) at the University of Alabama.
Prior to beginning my doctoral program work, I taught at Luverne
School in Alabama
(http://www.luverneschool.org/)
in grades 8-12 in the areas of physical science, chemistry, physics, and earth
science for three years.
I am the director of the Connecticut NASA Educator Resource
Center (ERC), which is a repository of current NASA educational materials.
Available for free, the materials can be picked up in our center located on the
first floor of J. Eugene Smith Library in the Curriculum Center. Visit our
website for up-to-date information about the materials located in the ERC at http://www.easternct.edu/depts/nasa
or visit us on campus.

On October 31-November
1, 2003, we launched our Great Explorations in Mathematics and
Science (GEMS) Training Site. Hope Cook, our curriculum librarian and I are the
GEMS Site co-directors. If you’re interested in attending our training
workshop, please contact me at the email address below. Future workshops will
be held here on ECSU’s campus and at professional organization meetings within Connecticut.
For more GEMS information, please go to http://lhsgems.org/gems.html
As a part of my university service to the community, I serve
on several boards including the Northeast
Corner Connecticut
Audubon Center
in Pomfret. This Audubon Center
houses the Ragged Hill Woods (RHW) Environmental Education program where many
of our students complete field placements under my supervision. The Center provides a unique outdoor,
field-based experience for our elementary undergraduate and graduate students.
If you are interested in completing an EDU 502 or EDU 503 clinical experience
at RHW, please contact me. We’re always looking for help! For more information,
please go to the following website:
I also serve as the higher education representative on the
Connecticut Science Teacher’s Association board. As an affiliate of the
National Science Teacher’s Association, the Connecticut
chapter hosted the Northeastern Regional National Science Teacher’s Association
meeting during the October 2005. Even though this big event is over, there’s no
time like now to join our group and hone your presentation skills at our annual
Professional Development Day! Our next event will be during the fall of
2006. Look on our website for more information: http://www.csta-us.org/
The Education Unit
The education unit at ECSU had a successful Connecticut
State accreditation visit in May
2002, and NCATE visit in September 2003. As a result of our reflection on our unit
philosophy of education, our conceptual framework was created.

Our unit develops courses with the constructivist philosophy
of education in mind. If you are
interested in a Master’s Degree in Science Education or our Secondary Education
Master’s Degree (either with or without certification), please contact me.
